Beauty Sleep

A well-spent day brings happy sleep. No denying, sleep in itself is important. A decent night’s rest can make a positive impact on your entire day, so it’s no surprise really that you’re more productive after a healthy dose. It’s a bit surprising to me though, that those who get a full hours night rest, still somehow find the time to nap in the afternoon. Where do you unlock that batch of sleep from?

Sleep is for the rich. You know you’re rich when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams. Steve Harvey made some now-famous quotes about sleep.

“Rich people don’t sleep eight hours a day! That’s a third of your life. It ain’t but 24 hours in a day! You cannot be asleep eight hours a day!”

I think he was spittin’ some major bull shit. If I was heir to a multi-billionaire(in dollars), best believe my days starts whenever I wake up.

Out like a light. I sometimes struggle with trying not to sleep, especially if I have reason to be up. But if I’m not getting any help, it becomes all the more difficult. If you’re texting someone late at night, fast replies are simply a must. Case in point. I once met this gorgeous lady at a function and we exchanged contacts.

I checked my network and made sure the message delivered.

A WHOLE minute later!

Too late!

Between us, you know it was not even my fault. Sixty seconds is a long time at night.

Sleepy eyes. You ever saw someone that looked like they’re half asleep all the time? Or the creepy group, who, while supposedly asleep, don’t fully close their eyes. So as you’re sneaking to their cupboard to steal from their provisions, it looks like they’re watching you the whole time.

Sleeping beauty. In today’s society, a story like ‘Sleeping Beauty’ will be met with so much criticism. What do you mean that only a man worthy of her love could break the curse? Shying away from that, how do you kiss someone WITHOUT their consent? Isn’t that harassment of some sort? Feminists in the house, please walk me through this.

Good parenting. The wife just had a baby and the incessant crying was starting to take a toll on our household. Just when we are about to get back-to-back hours of sleep, this happens!

She wins the argument(don’t they always). I go to do the business.

But what am I supposed to do?

She left me with no choice.

Bizarre sleeping positions. Some people talk in their sleep. Lecturers talk while other people sleep. You see some people with sleeping positions that oftentimes raise an eyebrow. I can understand babies who sleep with their bum raised in the air, but sis, aren’t you a bit too old for that?

This one time in school I caught a boy sleeping in the most unlikely place. He was in the shower. And yes! Water was running down his face as he slept. I wonder what demons he was battling. And if you think that’s bad, let me tell you about another boy who while sleeping, fell from the top bunk, flat on the ground and continued sleeping.

For the doubters who find it difficult to believe the tale, here’s an extra twist. He sustained a cut on his head and was indeed bleeding. In hindsight, I am inclined to believe he must have passed out. But how do you explain the fact that he was SNORING?

I leave you with a few nuggets of wisdom. Any kid will run any errand for you if you ask at bedtime. If you want a head start on tomorrow, eat breakfast tonight – that way you can sleep until lunchtime. Each night, when I go to sleep, I die. And the next morning, when I wake up, I’m reborn. In all, here’s a keen piece of advice. Your future depends on your dreams…

so go to sleep

  1. Some other thoughts around sleep from a person who works the night shift. Some people will say our bodies are not meant to be awake during the hours the sun goes down. I would love to argue this because I am never tired working the night shift, in fact I am more awake, productive and happier since I worked the night shift. As long as I keep my sleep schedule, I am fine. Since a teen I am more productive during night time hours. It is really weird or maybe it is just my internal clock. But 8 hours of sleep (less if you are older) I think is truly important and having a set sleep schedule no matter what time of day or night you are awake. Also less caffeine. I use to be tired at work all the time and realized my body was expecting caffeine at certain times and was messing me up when I needed to be sleeping.

    1. You make very valid points. Since the pandemic began, most people like me have seen a distortion of our sleep schedule. Some of us are only able to do a few hours at night and take the rest in the day.

I might just try to alter my schedule altogether and try to take all my sleep in the day. What do you think?

Also, yeah everyone should take note. Flee from caffeine!

      1. I have been having to work through the pandemic as I work in a grocery store which is an essential business, so for awhile I was on a normal and good sleep pattern. However, a couple weeks ago I failed our health screening we are now doing before every shift for safety precautions etc. I had a sore throat and a bit of a dry cough, but no fever at the time. I was sent home as a precaution, and from there got in touch with health professionals including a COVID hotline and failed their screening. Tests are not really available unless you are elderly and/or have underlying health problems, well available but resources and testing sites are limited. So I was suggested by my doctor to self quarantine for suspicion of COVID symptoms or what have you. I’m not sure if I had the coronavirus or not, I had some of the symptoms, but I only felt really crappy for almost a week and slept a lot. Since I have felt better though and still in quarantine my sleep schedule is completely out of wrack and I only have two days left to reset it. Lol. To alter my sleep schedule I am probably going to have to just stay up all night tonight and tomorrow night as that is my work schedule and either sleep 6-8 hours in the day, or take naps during the day.

Yes it is probably important to alter your sleep schedule, in times like this I would think it is important to live as much as a normal routine as we can since our lives have been flipped completely upside down and even the small bit of normalcy can help. Don’t wait until last minute like I did to fix your sleep schedule. 😛 I can guarantee you my first night back to work is going to be a rough one and will probably have to rely on caffeine temporarily to stay awake.

        1. Sad that you had to go through this harrowing experience. Personally I’ve been a bit paranoid about getting the virus so being caught in limbo must have sucked big time.

Valuable lesson learned. Don’t wait till the last minute to fix your sleep schedule. Hopefully the fire brigadier in me will learn from this.

Haha, you might want to lay off the caffeine for a while. Hang in there.

Sending love and light your way. ❤️

    1. Haha, you put the phrase “hit the ground running” to shame. A visionary 😂

I once tried to stretch while half asleep, I got a huge cut on my elbow for my troubles. The sleep vanished 😭
