Thank you for shouting at me said no deaf person ever. The handicap of deafness is not in the ear; it is in the mind. Being deaf does not make you dumb, just as hearing does not make you smart. Success listens only to applause, to all else it is deaf. In every good marriage, it pays sometimes to be a little deaf.
Metaphorically, tone deafness is when people are unable to discern what is of value in something. I think I’m tone deaf to abstract art. If it doesn’t have a face, I just don’t see what the fuss is about. Abstract art insists upon itself. The deaf believe there is nothing wrong. The hearing believe something needs to be fixed.
None so deaf as those that will not hear. None so blind as those that will not see. The awkward moment when you’ve already said “what?” three times and still have no idea what the person said, so you just agree. Hard of hearing. Please. Speak. Clearly. Love is deaf. You can’t just tell someone you love them. You have to show it.
Ultimately, I don’t think you can teach a tone deaf person how to sing. Some talents you’re just born with, unfortunately. There is a world of deaf, dumb and blind people out there, who are shuffling through their lives, not knowing how wonderful life can be. They have their moments, but they are very unconscious.
I don’t know what makes a writers voice. It’s dozens of things. There are people who write who don’t have it. They’re tone deaf, even though they’re very fluent. It’s an ability, like anything else, being a doctor or a veterinarian. Dear partner in crime, just remember if we get caught, you’re deaf and I don’t speak English.
In the deaf community, in order to play a role of someone with hearing loss…you have to have hearing loss. A deaf and dumb person who sees two men in conversation – may nevertheless understand from the attitudes and gestures of the speakers, how well their conversation is getting along. For the tone deaf man, he has no clue.
