Letting Go

One of the simplest ways to stay happy is letting go of the things that make you sad. Laugh when you can, apologize when you should, and let go of what you can’t change. Letting go does not mean you stop caring. It means you stop trying to force others to. 

You can’t reach for anything new if your hands are still full of yesterday’s junk. Moving on is hard. But the possibilities that letting go reveals are very thrilling. Accept what is. Let go of what was. Have faith in what will be. Bite the hand that fed you. 

If you love a friend, let them go. If they come back with a latte, it was meant to be. I now realize that instead of saying that I want to “grow” into my best self, I should say I want to “reduce” into my best self. I have no idea what that means but it sounds cool so you’ll make do. 

Sometimes being a friend means mastering the art of timing. There is a time for silence. A time to let go and allow people hurl themselves into their own destiny. And a time to pick up the pieces when it’s all over. It’s interesting to me that this generation can’t tell time on an analog clock. 

The hardest part about letting go is finally realizing that there wasn’t much left to hold on to. A couple of years ago, my therapist told me I had problems letting go of the past. She was wrong. Go easy on yourself. Whatever you do today, let it be enough. 

I don’t care about losing people that don’t wanna be in my life anymore. I’ve lost people who mean the world to me and I’m still doing just fine. At least that’s the lie I tell myself every night. If you gotta force it, just leave it alone. Relationships, friendships, jokes, ponytails…
