Road to Recovery

Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there. You know you’re addicted when you misplace things like…a decade. I was always the black sheep and then I started going to meetings and found the rest of the herd. They were hideous.

Is it just me or are all good looking, smart and funny people saying no to alcohol? Whenever I find myself in a gathering and I mention I don’t drink and it provokes everyone around me to stare in disbelief, part of me dies a little. Am I ugly? Why would they think I’m one of them?

When things seem to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind not with it. Just ensure you’re not a Boeing because you might have difficulty sticking the landing these days. Rock bottom is a solid foundation to build your life.

You’re so great, even germs like you. Recovery from illness often seems like beginning life over again. I didn’t know all I really needed was some HUGcetamol and some KISSpirin to get well soon. The truth is, even superheroes need rest. I’ll be back in action soon.

When ‘I’ is replaced by ‘We’ even ‘illness’ becomes ‘wellness.’ Asking for help is never a sign of weakness. It’s one of the bravest things you can do. And it can save your life. There is a crack in everything, that’s how light gets in. Explore the strength in perceived weakness.

Sometimes you will be in control of your illness, other times you will sink into despair, and that’s okay! Freak out, forgive yourself, wallow in self pity and forgive yourself tomorrow. I would rather go through life sober, believing I’m an alcoholic, than go through life drunk…

Trying to convince myself I’m not.
