Understanding Children

Children are really amazing creatures. Who else can talk so much. So early. Without caffeine. The quickest way for a parent to get a child’s attention is to sit down and look comfortable. Kids are full of energy until someone says “clean up” then they become so tired. 

Toddlers take 2 hours to put their shoes on. Yet they appear to be able to open to 4 apps, delete photos from your phone and make international calls in 12 seconds flat. Having one child makes you a parent. When you have two, you automatically become a referee. 

My friend recently asked me what the most difficult part of being a parent is. “Without a shadow of doubt, it’s the kids,”I replied. Children are like wet cement, whatever falls on them makes an impression. They have you on the clock the time. You can’t clock out even if you wished. 

Parenting is easier when you’re raising nonexistent kid hypothetically. You can learn many things from children. How much patience you have for instance. You insist that you do not want the “TV” raising your kid until they throw a lengthy tantrum, and the TV comes to your rescue. 

Silence is golden. Unless you have a toddler. Then it’s just suspicious. Being a father is the single greatest feeling on earth. Not including the wonderful years you spent without a child of course. Free as a bird. Glory days you will come to remember fondly as things unfold.

Now that I’m a parent, I understand why my father was in a foul mood a lot. I even have more respect for him sitting quietly in the veranda and staring into space for lengthy periods. When you children are teenagers, ours important to have a dog in the house. 

So that someone in the house is happy to see you.

  5. i had a toddler in my house for a weekend and it reaffirmed my decision to not have one for myself.

    Those little humans are a handful but sometimes they bring you 😊 joy .
