Dealing With Fatigue

I am not an early bird or a night owl. I am some form of permanently exhausted pigeon. Burnout occurs when your body and mind can no longer keep up with the tasks you demand of them. Don’t try to force yourself to do the impossible. Pigeons can’t fly high.

Being tired has become part of my personality. Our fatigue is often caused not by work, but by worry, frustration and resentment. People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing, that’s why we recommend it daily.

I am already exhausted for tomorrow. I make 1500+ decisions daily and I know not to waste mental energy on small ones. The more I pre-set choices, the less drained I feel. You don’t have to prove to anyone why you’re exhausted and tired. Anyone can be tired.

Don’t try to be positive all the time. It’s perfectly okay to feel down, to feel drained, to feel exhausted. But you should never feel like you have to stay there. Each day feels like I’m fighting to stay alive. But deep down, I wonder if I’m just delaying the inevitable.

Sometimes I’m not overthinking. I’m just mentally rehearsing every possible outcome. Kindly of like Dr.  Strange, but without the cape. I get tired of just thinking of everything I have to do. A calm mind is the ultimate weapon against challenges. So relax.

Affirmations are our mental vitamins, providing the positive thoughts we need to balance the barrage of negative events and thoughts we experience daily. Sometimes you don’t realize you’re actually drowning when you’re trying to be everyone else’s anchor.

If you’re happy and you know it, it’s your meds.

“Aghogday” is the online pseudonym of an autistic individual who is widely credited with coining or early popularizing the term autistic burnout. This term was used to describe a specific state of physical and mental exhaustion, loss of skills, and reduced tolerance to sensory input resulting from the chronic stress of “masking” or navigating a neurotypical world.”

    “Key Concepts of Autistic Burnout

Definition: A syndrome resulting from chronic life stress and a mismatch between expectations and abilities, characterized by pervasive, long-term exhaustion (often lasting 3+ months) and loss of function.

    Primary Causes:
Masking: The constant effort to hide autistic traits and act neurotypical.

Sensory Overload: Accumulating executive functioning demands and intense external stimuli.
Lack of Support: Managing adult responsibilities (employment, parenting) without adequate accommodations.

    Core Symptoms:
Skill Regression: Difficulty with speech, language, and executive functions that were previously manageable.

Heightened Sensitivity: Increased reactivity to light, sound, and other sensory inputs.
Physical and Mental Fatigue: Deep exhaustion, “brain fog,” and a feeling of being in “survival mode”.

Social Withdrawal: Withdrawing from social activities and relationships to conserve energy.
    Recovery and Management

Recovery typically requires significant lifestyle adjustments rather than standard medical treatments for depression.

Rest and Reduction: Prioritizing deep rest and reducing daily demands and sensory input.

Identifying Stressors: Pinpointing specific sources of chronic stress to design a more sustainable life.

Acceptance: Letting go of the shame associated with needing more support or being unable to maintain previous levels of activity.”
