Oil on Water

If you look closely at how you actually exist together, you aren’t a seamless blend. You can occupy the exact same space, share the same bed, and look beautiful floating on the surface together, but chemically, spiritually, and fundamentally, you do not mix. You are two entirely separate entities refusing to dissolve into each other.

Physical immersion is a cheap substitute for emotional transparency. You can talk about third-eye points of view and pretend their face is a full-blown universe, but if you avoid talking about your core incompatibilities, you are swimming in a mirage. A wave can crash over you without ever truly touching who you are underneath.

Forcing someone into the shape of your wonder-wall doesn’t mean they actually fit. You can scream “you fit me right” until you are blue in the face, but if you have to constantly smooth over the rough edges and ignore the separation to keep the peace, you are just admiring the rainbow sheen on top of a polluted puddle.

The million diamonds effect is just a trick of the light. The most beautiful, glittering surfaces often hide the fact that the two elements involved are fundamentally repelled by one another. In reality, the moment water gets turbulent, the oil separates and floats away completely unscathed. Talk about willingly tricked.

You are running a relationship, not a chemistry lab trying to force a reaction that nature forbids. You can pray and shout that they amaze you when they walk away, but if the underlying structure is built on two things that cannot inherently bond, no amount of time, grace, or patience will make them mix. But you can keep trying.

I’m fire, be my gasoline.

  2. This really made me pause. We can be so close to someone and still never truly meet beneath the surface. The metaphors were beautiful, and that last line stayed with me. A beautiful reflection for a new week.

    So well written.

  3. A truly deep reflection indeed because that person you think is a perfect fit may not be until all the rough edges are examined.

  4. “I’m fire, be my gasoline” is a wide contrast to oil and water. I didn’t know how I miss this week’s gem of banter republic, now that I’m here I have a few thoughts….

We often find ways to want to be cohesively adapted to others forgetting that our genes betray us.

Nature vvs Nuture inherently shows why some of us struggle to understand each other

Oil on water, why not oil on canvas and water under tye bridge?
